A Jews Life 1933 – 1945 Final Piece
January 14, 2018Before you start reading my first blog post I wanted to just give you a bit of an insight on what you will
expect throughout my posts. Each Sunday (hopefully not forgetting) I will talk
about a project that I have done or working on, or just talk about photography
it self. But I wanted you as my audience to understand what I’m trying to translate
in my work.
In the journey of creating this
project I took photographs of each stage the Jews would take in World war 2
when Germany was controlled by Hitler and the Nazis. Analysing these
photographs, it gave a chronological order of what happened to the people.
When coming to the end of the
project I decided to create a video to get more emotions behind the photographs
rather then seeing a still. By creating this video and adding in sound I think
gives the viewer more of an experience as the video in a gallery setting would
be in a separate room and it would be pitch black, the viewer would only see
the video, this would then intensify the emotion and sensitivity the video
brings across.
Creating this video was difficult
as I wanted to get the right sound and getting the different sounds effect in
the right place was key. Additionally, choosing the right photographs and
having a mixture of black and white photographs and colour photographs created
a different range showing old and new. I had also added in an overlay of fuzzy TV
screen on top of a photograph or a green screen to break up or disrupt the
video so its not perfect like old videos.
With the sound, its starts more of
horror undertone of the same note being played over and over again, adding
effects of the door and dripping tap. Furthermore I added in Prelude
Op. 28, No. 15, by Frédéric Chopin, which imitates raindrop and how it can start quick
and increases into a storm which I think links to the Jews journey thinking
they are just moving and catching a train but they have a sinister death which
is shock. I added in sound effects of a dog whimpering and the baby crying to
make the viewer feel the pain and suffering of what the Jews experienced. In
addition I used clips of Schindlers List by
Steven Spielberg and using clips from the concentration camp. With the last couple of
photographs there is just silence this is where I want the viewer to take in
what they have seen and for people to remember what happened to the thousands
of people.
This
video I believe it will transport the viewer to this moment in time and almost
makes the situation more realistic as its part of our history. As the viewer I hope
my video transports you into this part of history and you are able to reflect
on what happened to these people between 1933-1945.
